Centre of Attention is a city centre based exhibition. Artlink Hull is working in partnership with The Alternative limb Project and Fly Girl Films to create an exhibition of bespoke prosthetic limbs and explore and the process behind their creation.

The Alternative Limb Project was founded by Sophie Oliveira Barata using the unique medium of prosthetics to create highly stylised art pieces.

As with fashion, where physical appearance becomes a form of self-expression, Sophie sees the potential of prosthetics as an extension of the wearer’s personality. Merging the latest technology with traditional crafts, her creations explore themes of body image, modification, evolution, and transhumanism, all while promoting positive conversations around disability and celebrating body diversity. Sophie enlists various specialists in fields such as 3D modelling, electronics, and cutting edge technology to create each piece of art. Clients have included Paralympic athletes, music performers, models, and video game companies.

Sophie created a new prosthetic limb for fashion model and disability activist, Kelly Knox. Alongside this, she created two experimental limbs in collaboration with; Dani Clode – creative and mechanical design; Jason Taylor – 3d CAD modelling and mechanical design and Hugo Elias – electronics design and build. Fly Girl created two new films for Centre of Attention: a time-lapse capturing the process of creating the limb at The Alternative Limb studio in London, and a Hull-based documentary capturing the artistic qualities and functions of the limb as an object.

Omkaar Kotedia documented the process as the project photographer, working closely with Kelly and Sophie to create images for the exhibition to be shown alongside images selected from the Alternative Limb Project’s website.

Kelly Knox will attend the exhibition and deliver a talk about her experiences as a disability activist.

The work will be displayed in a retail outlet in Hull’s Princes Quay Shopping Centre throughout November, 2017. The venue will be open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 AM – 4 PM.
