May: Phoebe Kemp’s one-woman show about the true story of ‘cripple suffragette’ May Billinghurst
2 – 3:30pm. Ticketed, £8 and £5 concessions. Pre-booking essential as places are limited.

Artlink is hosting the tour in Hull of writer, performer and activist Phoebe Kemp’s one-woman show about the true story of ‘cripple suffragette’ May Billinghurst. Based on a true story, written and performed by Phoebe Kemp, directed by Rachel Adams and Anna Carr, ‘May’ has a unique take on the fight for women’s rights.

The play uses original letters and extracts between May Billinghurst, her family, Emmeline Pankhurst and other suffragettes. As well as exploring the constricts facing women, ‘May’ also journeys into the unspoken nature of LGBTQI individuals, sexual repression and the restricted lives of those with disabilities. Today, in a society where many continue to fight for their voices to be heard, Kemp returns to her story and asks – how far have we come in 100 years?
