In a self contained series of works, Briggs’ screen printed closed captions and sample manipulations assume responsibility for a number of placeholder images that consumers are expected to accept as forever secondary to the products that house them.
Where closed captions in Film, Television and digital humour are prone to the use of Heavy Metal music as a broad signifier of foreboding, excluding the hearing impaired communities from the admittedly maddening, subtleties of the genre, Briggs’ work invests technically serviceable, yet ultimately banal, hobby painting and stock photography with the celebratory zeal of “extreme” music fandom.
By deploying the implied meaning found mutating increasing amounts of Internet comedy accounts, Briggs reactivates discarded imagery and unwanted gifts in service of the sprawling, puerile and vital genealogies of Subculture.
